Competition Recommendations

USS ADM

Local and regional competitions are events organized by US Speedskating clubs and associations. These could be two days, one day, or even a couple of hours during a weekly practice session. These events are the foundation of the competition season across the country and are appropriate for all athletes at all stages of development. For those new to competing, these competitions often offer racing based on ability and not on age so competitors will be challenged by athletes of similar ability. These competitions may be part of a regional racing series like. These series have age and time standards that competitors must be met to qualify. These are a great step into the next level of National competition.

National competitions organized by US Speedskating. This includes the AmCup in Long Track, Age Group Nationals, or any competition that is used to select a team that will compete internationally. Age Group Nationals is the typical entry into National competitions, this competition is open to athletes in the Junior D category and older. It is a great competition where athletes can compete with other athletes from across the country to earn the title of National Champion in their age group. Other competitions would include US Junior Championships, US Championships, Olympic Trials and other selection competitions outlined in the Rules and Regulations. You do not have to be in contention to make a team or win a title to benefit from these competitions. They are a terrific opportunity to compete against new people at a higher ability level and will prepare you for what to expect in the future.

The International Skating Union organizes International Competitions. To compete in these competitions, you typically must qualify for the team through a US Speedskating selection competition. These competitions feature the best skaters from around the world and include Junior World Cups, Junior World Championships, Youth Olympic Games, World Cup, World Tour, 4 Continent Championships, World Championships, and Olympic Games.

Keep in mind that there are many competitions hosted internationally that may be appropriate for you or your athletes. Traveling to Canada can often be quicker and cheaper while offering a great competition environment equivalent to the Local and Regional Level or even National Level in the United States. Similarly, there are great competition opportunities in Europe that would be appropriate for athletes looking for competitions equivalent to the National Level.
