US SPEEDSKATING TO HOST OLYMPIC TRIALS AT UTAH OLYMPIC OVAL

Long and Short Track Trials to be Broadcast

23 January 2013.  Kearns, UT.  Following a month-long bid process, US Speedskating has selected the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, UT as the site for the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Short and Long Track Speedskating.  The Trials will also be broadcast on the networks of NBC, it was announced today.

"The Utah Olympic Oval is a world-class facility and has hosted many successful World Cups and World Championships and so we are very pleased to bring our Olympic Trials to a venue that can set the stage for a phenomenal trials and select our team for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi," said Mark Greenwald, Executive Director for US Speedskating.  "Having hosted the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, we know fans in Utah will come out to support our athletes as they vie for a spot on the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team."

The Long Track Olympic Trials will be held from December 27, 2013 thru January 1, 2014, followed immediately by the Short Track Trials, which will take place January 2-5, 2014.

“We are very happy to have won the bid to host US Speedskating’s 2014 U.S. Olympic Trials,” said Colin Hilton, President and CEO of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation.  “The Oval is the training site for most of these athletes 365 days a year so we are thrilled to be able to be an intregral part of making their Olympic dream come true.  The Utah Olympic Oval is a world-class facility and we are looking forward to working with US Speedskating, the State of Utah and the Utah Sports Commission on making this a successful event.”

For Short Track, there are a maximum of 12 spots on the Olympic Team, six for the men and six for ladies.  Athletes will compete for a spot on the team in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m.

"I'm very happy that Olympic Trials will be at the Utah Olympic Oval," said Olympic Medalist J.R. Celski.  "This is where most of the short and long track athletes in the USA train throughout the season so the "home" factor definitely comes into play. It will be a fun and exciting event on the road to Sochi."

In Long Track, a max of 20 athletes can be named to the Olympic Team, 10 men and 10 ladies.  Distances for the men include 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5K and 10K and for the ladies, 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3K and 5K.

The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be held in Sochi, Russia, from February 7-23, 2014.  Both Long and Short Track will be held in Sochi's "coastal" cluster.  Short Track will be held in the Iceberg Skating Palace and Long Track will be at the Adler Arena.

The Utah Olympic Oval is a 400m indoor speedskating oval with two-hockey sized ice rinks and a 442m running track.  Considered the 'Fastest Ice On Earth', the Oval regularly hosts speedskating World Cups, World Championships and played host to Long Track Speedskating at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.  In additional to being a training site for elite athletes, the Oval is open to public and offers a number of community based programs and "Learn To" clinics.
