Richardson Has Record-Breaking Races On Day Two

Friday: Dec//28
U.S. Long Track Nationals

On the second day of competition at the U.S. National Long Track Championships, the sprinters took the ice to showcase their speed at the Utah Olympic Oval.  Starting the day off with a bang was Heather Richardson, who set a new National Record in the ladies 500m (1) with a time of 37.51 and then broke that record with an even faster time in the second 500m race with a time of 37.34.  In addition to her new National Record, Richardson's time is also the fastest 500m in the world so far this season.

Athletes--both men and ladies--competed in two 500m races today.  The winners are determined by adding their times in both races together, also known as a samalog in speedskating.  For the ladies, it was Richardson atop the podium with a combined time of 74.850.  In second place, it was Brittany Bowe with a combined time of 76.370 (500m 1/38.30, 500m 2/38.07), followed in third by Lauren Cholewinski, with a combined time of 77.040 (500m 1/38.53, 500m 2/38.51).

"When I did the 37.5, I said 'ok, that was pretty good' and I wanted to try and beat it so I'm really glad that I did," said Richardson of her record-breaking performance today.  "It's really exciting.  To be able to podium in the 500m is really impressive for me because my start is no where near as close to the other girls and its something I really want to work on."

In the men's 500m races, Mitch Whitmore took first with a combined time of 70.510.  He logged a 35.14 in the first 500m and a 35.37 in the second.  In second place overall was Tucker Fredricks with a combined time of 70.700 (500m 1/35.55, 500m 2/35.15) and in third is was Clay Cholewinski with a combined time of 71.170 (500m 1/35.67, 500m 2/35.50), making it a Bronze-medal day for the Cholewinski siblings.

"I wanted to get a 34 coming into this weekend," said Whitmore of his win today.  "The first one was really close, but I'm still really happy with both races."
